Vallejo should work with those that have Airbnb listings and add an occupancy tax or permit fee to the city (like most other cities do). Those who are subleasing shouldn’t be allowed to run Airbnbs (unless approved by landlord/city), but those who own their homes should be allowed to do what they want, as long as they are good neighbors and pay their fair share.

Vallejo needs the business and tourists. Airbnb listings bring folks into town who spend money and help small businesses.

Properly regulate, yes, but do not ban, that is short sighted and the city of Vallejo needs all the business and taxes it can get!

The author should know that middle class comes in all colors. It isn’t just white high incomes buying homes here. In my neighborhood there have Black, Asian, Latinx, and more homeowners. And, they might like arugula too.

Also, I doubt this Air BNB issue is a big deal in other parts of the city.

What an odd way to begin an article. Get to know Vallejo. Get outside of your Downtown bubble.

I was being sarcastic. I am not high income white and I bought a home here.

Good post Thomas, lots of good information on air bnb that most people probably were not aware of. I agree that Vallejo should be proactive and get policies in place so that both owners and short term renters have a rule book to work from. In the broader view of Vallejo and it’s housing challenges, however, the air bnb issue is akin to addressing a hang nail for a cancer patient. Murders in Vallejo over the last few years come from a subculture that lives in our HUD sponsored housing projects.

I recommend people educate themselves about the disastrous housing policies already in place that plague Vallejo and our total lack of enforcement for section 8 and HUD low income housing projects. The HUD Marina Vista apartments continue to be home to gangs that beef and murder across Vallejo and the larger Bay Area. Perhaps addressing the Air bnb policies could be a gateway to looking at all of Vallejo housing policies and enforcing rules that have been on the books for decades.

I strongly encourage people to watch this video about Vallejo gangs and murders. It’s only 13 minutes long but will expose some of the most important housing related issues we face:

As is my custom I reported a dust covered car parked in the same spot quite a while to VPD. After 120 days I wrote to a City Commissioner and she passed it on to an employee. Special emphasis resulted in the car being moved by the owner to his or her yard about ten feet away.
Without special attention being placed on this nothing would have happened if my experience with this problem for over ten years in Vallejo is any indication.
The Mayor tells me “there is no money “ to solve the problem of hundreds of vehicles left sitting for months in one place. There was however, $450,000 for ONE assistant Chief at VPD however.
My point finally is why bother to create another regulation that can’t be enforced?
