Voices: Kudos To City of Vallejo’s Rekha Nayar
By Ken Szutu
While we have heard many harsh comments toward the city hall lately, I want to share some good news with you and give a shout-out to our Financial Director, Ms. Rekha Nayar.
Aside from being well prepared at the city council meetings, what impressed me this time is she took the initiative to reach out to me (a resident) and answer questions I asked at a recent council meeting, outside the meeting, without being asked (by her boss or city council).
This may be a small thing in your book, but this is such a departure from my experience interacting with the city hall.
I want to bring this to your attention and acknowledge her for the extra miles she walked.
During the Aug-24-2021 city council meeting, I commented before the consent calendar vote. I said, “I like to know more about the consent calendar item ‘COV investment portfolio Report.’ ….”
This consent calendar item – ‘COV investment portfolio Report’ was not taken out for discussion and was passed as part of the package that night.
I thought that was the end of my wanting to learn more about the investment report.
To my surprise, I received an email from Ms. Nayar at 8:49 pm, still in the middle of the city council meeting; it reads..”

Hello Ken
I believe you requested some information, at today’s council, regarding the investment report. I am happy to provide you any clarification and explanation if you send me your questions.
Thank you!

Director, Finance

What a breath of fresh air. No need to go through the PRA request to get some answers from the city hall?
Yes, I sent her a list of very detailed questions, and yes, I received the answers to my questions today.
There are people inside the city hall doing their job, working hard, and helping the residents. We need to call them out as much as we need to call out people who consider residents a nuisance inside the city hall.
City staff, city council members are all different. So for accountability, name names.
Thank you, Ms. Rekha Nayar, for your extra effort!
